Brian Joyce - Metallurgical Services Director
Brian Joyce, Ph.D.
Director of Metallurgical Services

World Class Expertise: With multiple degrees and in the final stages of receiving a PhD focusing on Materials Engineering, Dr. Joyce is well suited to lead difficult mechanical and chemical testing and failure analysis assignments. Brian holds an aeronautical and astronautical engineering degree from Purdue and masters degrees in both material science engineering and cost analysis.

Failure Analysis Leader: Brian has extensive experience performing failure analysis for the aerospace, automotive, medical, and construction industries. Companies supported in the past include Delphi, A.O. Smith, International Paper, Smith’s Aerospace divisions and the Department of Energy. Brian has even performed testing on advanced materials used in space-based applications.

Customer Focus: As Director of the Lab, Brian understands his customers’ needs and keeps that focus while leading MSI. Brian has a unique ability to communicate with frontline employees as well as converse at the PhD level with Design Engineers or CEO’s. His reports are clear and easy to understand, resulting in your ability to take quick action.


Bill Johnston - Quality Manager

15+ Years of Testing Experience: Bill joined MSI to develop the ISO17025 quality system as well as to perform other functions like chemistry and metallography prep. Bill brings a wealth of experience to MSI. After earning his Bachelors of Science Degree from Hillsdale College, Bill honed his analytical abilities as a technician in the metals department at an environmental testing Lab, a chemistry shift foreman at AK Steel and chemist at Met-Labs in Dayton, Ohio. Bill is proficient with all types of equipment, including Inductive coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Graphite furnace Atomic Absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS), ICP OES, GDS, and carbon by combustion.

Quality Liaison: Bill’s goal is to maintain a quality system that will enable MSI to provide its customer with timely, and accurate data to help them make informed decisions about their processes, products, and materials.
